How to store kids' clothes you buy ahead

Buying next year's clothes on clearance only saves money if they get worn. The usual way it goes wrong is a bag at the back of a closet that turns up a year too late.

Sort by size, not by season

Use one bin per size. A kid moves through sizes in order, so when the size 6 clothes start to fit, everything in the size 6 bin is ready at once: the coat, the swimsuit and the pajamas.

Write the size on two sides of the bin so it can be read from wherever it is stacked.

Keep a list

Tape a list to the lid or keep a note on your phone: what is inside, by season. Check it before you shop the next clearance, so you do not buy a second winter coat in the same size.

Before you put it away

Check the bin a month early

Put a note in your calendar a month before each season starts. Kids grow in spurts, and a size bought a year ago may need to come out sooner than planned. Measure your kid and run the numbers again.

When something does not fit

Pass it on, resell it, or keep it for a younger sibling. At clearance prices, a miss costs little.
