They are two different sales. Black Friday discounts what kids are wearing now, in every size. After Christmas, stores clear what is left of it, at lower prices and in fewer sizes. Which one is better depends on when the clothes will be worn.
Black Friday is November 27 in 2026. Stores cut prices on clothes that are in season and fully stocked. Adobe, which tracks online prices, expects clothing discounts to peak at about 23% off listed prices this holiday season, with the best clothing deals landing on Black Friday itself.
After Christmas is a clearance. Stores need the winter and holiday stock gone to make room for spring, so the cuts are deeper and they keep getting deeper. Last season, Walmart and Target both cut holiday items to 50% off on December 26 and to 90% off by the end of the first week of January, according to the deal site The Krazy Coupon Lady. Winter coats and snow gear follow through January and February.
The catch after Christmas is sizes. What is left is what did not sell, and the common kids' sizes go first.
The two sales call for different sizes. On Black Friday you are buying for the next three months. In January you are buying for a winter that ends 13 months later. This table is for a kid of average height.
