When kids' snow pants and bibs go on clearance, and what size to buy

Snow pants and bibs are marked down from January to March with the rest of the winter gear. They are one of the best things to buy ahead, because many pairs are built to be let out as your kid grows.

When the markdowns happen

Winter stock is cleared from January, right after the holidays. January has the most sizes. March has the lowest prices and whatever is left.

Snow pants bought in January are next worn from about November to February, so they have to fit 13 months from now.

What size to buy

This table is for a kid of average height. It shows the size to buy for next winter, and the size your kid will need the year after that.

Pairs that grow

Several brands sew extra length into the legs, held up by a line of colored thread a few inches above the cuff. When the legs get short, you turn the pants inside out, snip that thread and pull it out, and the leg drops down.

Kids' pant legs get about an inch and a half longer with each size, so a let-out leg is worth roughly one size. Where the two columns in the table are one size apart, a pair with this feature, bought in the yellow size, can cover both winters.
